timeline

born 1965

Dr. Leslie Gordon has been on a mission since 1998. That's when she learned her 22-month-old son Sam had progeria, a fatal condition which causes children to age prematurely. Her goal ~ to find a cure for the disease that claims most victims by the age of 14. Even if she was unable to save Sam, she said, "I could not live with myself if I didn't try."

Along with husband + fellow doctor Scott Berns, Leslie founded the Progeria Research Institute in 1999. Within a decade, they'd identified the gene that causes progeria and discovered a possible treatment. Sadly, before he could benefit, Sam died in 2014 at age 17. His short but amazing life continues to inspire Leslie + others to keep up the fight in what she considers a race against time.
