born 1983

When a high school teacher mentioned engineering to Debbie Sterling, she thought that meant a career driving trains. All her life, Debbie played with "girl" toys ~ dolls, dress up, princesses. No one focused on introducing the little girl to the possibilities in math + science. But, in college, she discovered and thrived in the male-dominated field of engineering.

Determined not to let little girls miss out on their potential, Debbie created GoldieBlox, a building set that introduces engineering principles. She's bridging the gap between gender-focused toy marketing and the lack of gear for girls. With a Kickstarter campaign, a viral video featuring young girls building a Rube Goldberg device and a float in the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade, GoldieBlox is off + building.
